Awareness Campaign
CLASP (Cervical Cancer Screening and Prevention) in association with cCA (cancerCareAfrica) ran a cervical and breast cancer awareness-raising event at the Best of Nigeria Expo which was held at the Excel Centre on the 19th and 20th of October. The event was well attended by Nigerians from all works of life.
Our stall generated a variable amount of interest. A number of people scuttled by, eyes averted, as they were frightened by the mere mention of the word cancer. It gave the team the opportunity to explain to those that could be persuaded to listen that cervical cancer is potentially preventable and that breast cancer is curable if detected early.
Some people showed particular interest because a member of their family had been affected by cancer. There were some touching personal stories. Some had never heard of cervical cancer.
We were surprised that the men appeared to show more interest than the women who attended the event. Thus, there were several opportunities for public education.
We are grateful to those who gave generously and we were able to raise nearly £300 from on-the-spot donations. Some people took away our details with a promise to make a donation at a later stage. If you still wish to donate towards the St Kizito Clinic , please make cheques payable to UCL Hospitals Charities Fund 0940 and send to
